A PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT AT UNIVERSITY CITY HIGH SCHOOL

This year, for the first time the Technology and Communication Charter at UCHS offered a photography class for students in 10 th, 11th and 12 th grades. The students learned to take, to develop and to print photographs. This class is part of a larger project in which Social Studies and Language Arts teachers are using photography and oral history to create an interdisciplinary curriculum. Students in these classes use photography, oral history and photo-essays to document their lives outside school and to express their personal feelings. The following stories, poems and photo-essays are some of the projects the students created this year. We will update the web page this summer with work the students will create at Phil-a-Job summer school.

STORIES FROM HOME

Students tell stories through photographs they took of specific subjects or situations. The students followed their subjects for two months and took approximately 60 pictures from which they selected 10-12 photos and put them together into stories. Following is one of the stories.

THE UNEXPECTED CALL, by: Labrea Smith

PHOTO POEMS

These are poems the students wrote inspired by pictures they took. The theme of the project is work.

TAKE MY HAND, by: Troung Troung
MY FAITHFUL DESK , by: Curtis Williams

WEST PHILADELPHIA TOUR

The students documented with pictures and words the school's neighborhood. The difference between their pictures demonstrates that each student sees the neighborhood differently. Some of the issues that the students focused on were housing, businesses and transportation.
